Minerals, plant fossils and geological finds, “Fossilia”<\/h2>\n

The museum “Fossilia”<\/b><\/span> in M\u00f6lten presents the most beautiful fossil finds from the surroundings of M\u00f6lten and makes the fascinating geological history of this region come alive.<\/p>\n

Along with the Bletterbach and the Seceda, M\u00f6lten is one of the only three sites in South Tyrol where plant fossils from the upper (late) Permian period have been discovered.<\/p>\n

Particularly unique: fossilized tree trunks have been recovered in M\u00f6lten. Details such as growth form, branches, roots and proportions have thus been preserved and invite you to marvel. <\/b><\/p>\n

A guided tour with our experienced experts is highly recommended.<\/p>\n

The newly designed exhibition is barrier-free and offers exciting insights – both during the guided tours and the interactive experiences in our laboratory.<\/p>\n

Our guided tours and laboratory experiences are aimed at all age groups, from curious children from the age of three to interested adults.<\/p>\n

Former mayor Franz Josef Karnutsch<\/strong> \u2020 2009<\/p>\n

The mayor of M\u00f6lten at the time, himself an expert on fossils and minerals, regularly visited the quarry – and discovered impressive fossil finds.<\/p>\n

A local inspection together with geologists Karl Krainer and Helfried Mostler from the University of Innsbruck quickly confirmed the significance of the discoveries: They were fossils from the Upper Permian period, dating back around 260 million years ago.<\/p>\n

Fossilia, a pioneering achievement<\/h2>\n

The fossil museum Fossilia<\/b><\/span> has a very special history.<\/p>\n

In the 1980s, damaged original stones had to be replaced on the parish tower of Bolzano Cathedral. After many years and weather-related wear and tear, a comprehensive renovation was necessary. To this end, the historic quarry in M\u00f6lten was reopened to extract M\u00f6ltner sandstone.<\/b><\/p>\n

On the initiative of Franz Josef Karnutsch, the first fossil show was set up in M\u00f6lten, which was open to visitors for around 20 years.<\/p>\n

Construction of the new museum finally began at the end of 2020 and it will open in 2023 as the modern Fossilia fossil museum<\/b><\/span> opened its doors – a place where the history of the earth comes alive.<\/p>\n

The fossil museum “Fossilia”<\/strong><\/span> is located in the village center of M\u00f6lten, right next to the tourist office, the school center and the municipal building.
It can be easily reached by car (via Terlan, V\u00f6ran or Jenesien) or by public transport:<\/p>\n
